Mammoth Gallery

The Mammoth Art Gallery opens its new headquarters in Florianópolis. In addition to the Porto Alegre unit, the gallery expands its operations and installs itself in a prominent space on the island: Armazém Rita Maria, a completely restored historic-architectural complex, in close relationship with the city's present and past. Curated by Henrique Menezes, the opening exhibition has the title: “For the sea that takes us further. Through the air that takes us further” and will be presented in two moments, January and April 2022. The show brings together represented and invited artists.

The idea of a timeline carries with it the feeling that events take the form of a plain, equivalent in their potency and uniform in their intensity. In the year in which it completes a decade of activities, the Mamute gallery shows us that there are high points in the relief of history: by opening a new headquarters in Florianópolis, it reaffirms its project of action, taking Brazilian contemporary art across borders.

In its trajectory, Mamute has led more than fifty exhibitions in its exhibition space — an imposing building listed in the Historic Center of Porto Alegre — in addition to promoting the visibility of the represented artists, bringing them closer to multiple audiences: it organized and supported exhibitions throughout Brazil and abroad. abroad, participating in fairs and exhibitions that contributed to the legitimization of the production disseminated by the gallery. In these (first) ten years, Mamute believed in dialogue between generations, recognizing established names and also revealing young artists with careers on the rise: it is the coexistence of the established with the new that keeps art pulsating, open to emerging languages. The artists who make up the gallery’s cast make up important public and private collections: MAC USP, Pinacoteca de São Paulo, MACRS, MARGS, Fundação Vera Chaves Barcellos, MASC, among others — in addition to taking part in well-known events such as the Venice Biennials, São Paulo Paulo and Mercosur.

Moving forward will never be a passive attitude: going beyond limits and going beyond requires action, energy, impulse. To mark its arrival in Santa Catarina, Mamute presents two exhibitions — By the sea that takes us further will occupy the gallery from January and By the air that takes us further will be on display at the end of March, combining a selection of represented artists. and local guests. In a poetic abstraction, what separates the sea and the air is the horizon — a fertile image to illustrate the movement that the gallery undertakes in 2022: looking far away and moving forward, open to the flows and aware of the north it wants to reach.
